PSO Musicians Bring Musical Meditation to Pittsburgh-area Schools

by Rhian Kenny

The PSO Musicians Care Fund was founded in 2013 by our then-principal tympanist Ed Stephan to help support struggling public school music programs, their students and teachers.  Since then, we have used it to distribute more than $55,000 to purchase new instruments, repair broken instruments, and provide busing for more than 1500 students to our Schooltime concerts

This fall, we have begun an exciting new partnership with Mindful Musical Moment to bring classical music to students every day of the school year! The students, at the start of every school day, will hear 3-5 minutes of music with a voiceover asking them to pause, listen, and reflect on what they’re hearing.  Imagine 180 days of classical music exposure for these school children from grades K-12!

A Mindful Moment is in over 300 schools nationwide and reaches more than 100,000 students every day.  Our pilot project already has 17 schools signed up, including:

Avalon Elementary School
Bellevue Elementary
Dickson STEAM Preparatory Academy
Kelly Elementary
